Almost all the healing benefit of an aftercare balm comes from the wax and oil base holding water in the wound. The botanical actives are the part most likely to cause a problem, because the barrier is open.

A fresh tattoo is a wound, and aftercare is wound care. Reading the category that way sorts the claims quickly.

## What a tattoo physically is

A tattoo needle deposits pigment through the epidermis into the **upper dermis**. Two things follow from that depth.

**The epidermis is punctured, so the barrier is gone** over the tattooed area — thousands of micro-punctures, a serous exudate, and a raw surface that is both losing water and open to microbial entry and to chemical penetration that intact skin would refuse. This state lasts days, until re-epithelialisation closes it.

**The pigment stays because cells hold it.** Dermal macrophages phagocytose the ink particles. When such a macrophage dies, the released particles are taken up by neighbouring macrophages — a capture, release and recapture cycle that keeps the pigment fixed in place across cell generations. Permanence is therefore an active, cellular process rather than inert deposition. Particles small enough to be carried off drain to regional lymph nodes, which is why tattoo pigment is found there and why tattoos fade and blur over years.

## Moist wound healing is the mechanism that matters

The foundational observation is old and robust: wounds kept moist re-epithelialise faster than wounds allowed to dry and scab. A scab is a barrier to the migrating keratinocytes that must resurface the wound; they have to tunnel beneath it, which takes longer. Keeping the surface moist lets them migrate across.

An aftercare product delivers this by **occlusion** — a hydrophobic film that reduces transepidermal water loss so the wound bed stays hydrated by the body's own fluid.

This is where the base does the work. Petrolatum is strongly occlusive, which is why it was the traditional choice, and its drawback is that it is *too* occlusive for a weeping wound if applied thickly, trapping exudate. Plant-oil-and-wax balms — beeswax or candelilla wax carrying olive, sunflower or coconut oil — are **semi-occlusive**: they reduce water loss substantially while remaining more permeable. That is a genuine formulation advantage for this specific wound type, and it is a property of the wax-and-oil base, not of any botanical in it.

## The actives carry the risk, not the benefit

Calendula, helichrysum, tamanu and rosehip have reported anti-inflammatory or antioxidant activity, mostly in vitro or in small studies, and the evidence that any of them accelerates healing beyond a bland occlusive is thin.

The risk is better characterised than the benefit, and it follows directly from the anatomy. **A compromised barrier greatly increases percutaneous absorption and greatly increases the chance of sensitisation.** Botanical extracts are complex mixtures containing known contact allergens — sesquiterpene lactones in the Asteraceae family, to which calendula belongs; limonene and linalool in essential oils, which oxidise on air exposure into more potent sensitisers than the parent compounds.

Sensitisation to a substance applied over a tattoo is also unusually consequential, because the reaction can localise to the tattooed area and be mistaken for a pigment allergy.

The defensible summary is that this is a category where **simplicity is the technically superior choice**: a clean, semi-occlusive, fragrance-free base applied thinly does what the wound needs, and each added botanical adds sensitisation risk against a benefit that has not been demonstrated.
