Single-use assemblies, tubing, microcarriers and buffers — the materials and chemistry a bioprocess stands on.
The cluster is about the items at the bottom of the budget that determine the process at the top. The same materials pair runs through every page: a polymer must pass what is wanted and block what is not, and every property cuts both ways. Single-use film is sterilised by irradiation, and radiation chemistry is a choice between chain scission and crosslinking — what leaches from the film into the product stays in the product. Silicone tubing breathes, which is simultaneously the advantage (gas exchange) and the defect (loss of volatiles), while a peristaltic pump tests it with millions of compressions.
Microcarriers reduce a culture to surface chemistry: charge and extracellular matrix decide whether a cell attaches, suspension mechanics whether it is torn off. Buffers look like the dullest link until pH turns out to depend on temperature and incoming water quality to dominate cost.
