Blue bioeconomy
The blue bioeconomy sector: aquaculture and seafood, marine biotechnology, blue carbon and coastal ecosystem restoration.
The blue sector differs from the terrestrial one in that the environment is an active party: wave, current, salt and depth take part in every process — as resource and as wear. Three clusters: aquaculture & seafood — the farmed organism’s biology as the operating system; marine biotech — the countermeasures the sea has already paid for (enzymes, fluorescent proteins, antifouling surfaces); blue carbon & restoration — anoxic carbon burial in coastal sediments and the limits of restoring it.
The recurring motif is hydrology before biology: tidal exchange decides a mangrove’s fate, current decides a cage’s, stratification decides a bloom’s. The second motif is access: from the research vessel to the right to read a genome, the bottleneck has migrated from engineering to jurisdiction.
The entry point is macroalgae: the life cycle that needs neither land nor fertiliser.
