Ecology & restoration

The ecology sector of the bioeconomy: pollution cleanup, ecosystem restoration, the science of biodiversity observation.

The ecology sector works with systems that are already broken or about to break, and its three clusters differ by the moment of intervention: bioremediation — destroy what should never have entered the environment; ecosystem restoration — return lost mechanisms once a system has left its equilibrium; monitoring & conservation — notice before breaking becomes necessary.

The sector’s recurring motif is thresholds: a polluted soil and a degraded community both look “almost fine” for a long time and then fail all at once. The second is detection probability: in monitoring, every honest number travels with a chance of having missed the thing. The third is microbes as the workforce: both cleanup and nutrient cycling rest on consortia that must be kept alive rather than invented.

The entry point is bioremediation: the logic of “do not leave it more toxic than you found it” is clearest there.
