Old process
Landfilling, incineration, and direct land application of untreated residues.
→
New practice
Anaerobic digestion, pyrolysis, hydrothermal carbonization (HTC), and composting for residue-to-product conversion.
Displaced at scale?
no
Caveats
The evidence does not show a decisive, large-scale displacement of conventional disposal methods (landfilling, incineration, land application) by bio-based practices like pyrolysis or hydrothermal carbonization (HTC). While some bio-based technologies are operational, they often remain in pilot or niche stages, and conventional methods still dominate waste management in many regions.

In the United States, anaerobic digestion is used to produce renewable natural gas (RNG) from various waste streams, though it currently captures only a small fraction of the total potential.
“For example, only 10% of collected landfill biogas is used for RNG production, while 53% is flared to reduce methane emissions, 28% is used for electricity generation, and 8% is used in direct heating applications (EPA 2023a).”

In Italy, municipal sewage sludge management is still dominated by conventional methods, with only a small portion of the market utilizing alternative recovery pathways.
“Around 40% was applied to agricultural land, benefiting from its organic and nutrient content. Approximately 30% underwent incineration, while about 20% was disposed of in landfills. The remaining 10% was exported.”

Environmental-mitigation financing tools and waste directives are identified as key drivers steering the market for advanced sludge treatment technologies in the EU.
“At this stage, environmental-mitigation financing tools, ranging from EU Green Deal grants to carbon credit schemes, become decisive, converting refurbishment outlays into investments that deliver tangible returns: revenues from carbon credits, energy savings, lower sludge-disposal costs, and phosphorus recovery. Replaces: landfill, lagoons, open burning, incineration of wet waste · Scope: household to industrial · Evidence: high

The chemical problem#

  • The waste and energy collections (WC, EN, BR) show biological routes for residues. Each needs a plant, and each plant needs equipment and someone to build it.
  • Without local builders and service, projects stall and residues are burned or dumped.

Product overview#

  1. Anaerobic digesters — household/prefab (EN01), farm (LE02) and industrial (CSTR, UASB, covered lagoon), plus biogas cleaning (desulfurization, see RM03) and upgrading to biomethane.
  2. Composting and organic-fertilizer lines — windrow turners, in-vessel composters, crushers, granulators, dryers, coolers and packaging.
  3. Biomass pelleting and briquetting lines — for agro-residue fuels (EN05).
  4. Pyrolysis, carbonization and torrefaction kilns — for biochar (CR01) and biocoal; continuous rotary kilns to batch retorts.
  5. EPC/turnkey builders — design, build, commission and operate.

Active ingredient / Composition#

  • Not applicable (equipment). Key specifications: feedstock range, throughput (t/day), gas yield/methane content, emissions control, automation, service network.

Key facts#

ParameterValue
DigestersMature from household to multi-MW scale; performance depends on feedstock and operation
CompostingMechanized turning and aeration shorten composting and stabilize quality
PyrolysisModern kilns capture and burn pyrolysis gases; traditional earth kilns are highly polluting
Business modelsEquipment sale, turnkey EPC, build-own-operate, carbon-credit co-financing

Advantages#

  • Converts a disposal cost into gas, fertilizer, fuel or biochar.
  • Often co-financed by carbon credits (methane avoidance, biochar removals).
  • Local fabrication possible for simpler equipment (turners, pellet mills, small digesters).

Mode of action#

  • Digesters provide controlled anaerobic conditions for methanogenic microbes; composters provide aeration and mixing for aerobic microbes; pyrolysis kilns heat biomass without oxygen to fix carbon in char.

Application#

ResiduePlantEquipment and specifics
Manure, food waste, POME, vinasseBiogasDigester + gas cleaning + engine or upgrading unit (EN01, EN04, BR02)
Market and municipal organicsCompost / organic fertilizerTurners, screens, granulation line (NU03, WC02)
Straw, husks, EFBPellets or biocharPellet line (EN05) or pyrolysis kiln (CR01)
SmallholdersHousehold energyPrefabricated digesters (EN01, LE02)

Limitations#

  • Operation, not equipment, is the main failure point (feedstock supply, skilled staff).
  • Emissions control matters: leaky digesters and dirty kilns erase the climate benefit.
  • Capital and financing; carbon-credit income is volatile.

Evidence of displacement — D1: works, adoption not proven#

Assessment (hand-reviewed): Mismatch: Italian sludge disposal routes are not evidence about biogas/composting equipment.

Figures found (verified as quoted, but the assessment above explains why they do not count as displacement evidence for this substitution):

  • displacement — In the United States, anaerobic digestion is used to produce renewable natural gas (RNG) from various waste streams, though it currently captures only a small fraction of the total potential. (United States, 2022; government or intergovernmental: osti.gov)
  • displacement — In Italy, municipal sewage sludge management is still dominated by conventional methods, with only a small portion of the market utilizing alternative recovery pathways. (Italy, 2022; peer-reviewed: mdpi.com)

Government funding signals#

Scanned 2026-10-02 (OpenAIRE + NSF + USDA); candidates reviewed by hand.

Signal: Moderate. Scale-up of residue-processing plants is funded: EC 101182442 (modular biochar and board production plants, €5.0 M, 2025), Vinnova 2017-03210 (upscaling fly-larvae composting, SEK 4.5 M), Formas 2022-01203 and EC 651495 (high-efficiency composting business). Mature digester technology is mostly financed by energy and carbon policy rather than research grants.
