Caveats
While research has identified viable alternatives to formaldehyde, there is no evidence of large-scale commercial displacement; formaldehyde remains a common industry standard, and testing alternatives under commercial conditions is described as difficult and expensive.

The chemical problem#

Formaldehyde fumigation (formalin + KMnO₄) is still common in hatcheries in Russia, the CIS, Asia and Africa: for hatching eggs, incubators and hatchers during hatching. Formaldehyde is classified by the IARC as a Group 1 human carcinogen. Exposure of chicks during hatching damages the tracheal epithelium (and increases respiratory disease). Workers are exposed to irritant and carcinogenic vapour. In the EU, formaldehyde use is increasingly restricted (occupational exposure limits and biocide regulation). In dairy farming, formalin foot-baths against digital dermatitis expose workers and pollute slurry.

Product overview#

  1. Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) and peracetic acid (PAA): fogging or spraying of eggs, incubators and houses. Both break down into water, oxygen and acetic acid, leave no persistent residues, and have broad biocidal activity (bacteria, viruses, fungi, spores at higher concentrations).
  2. UV-C light for hatching-egg surfaces and hatcher air (conveyor UV tunnels).
  3. Probiotic cleaning: after cleaning (and optional disinfection), spores of harmless Bacillus strains (B. subtilis, B. amyloliquefaciens, B. licheniformis) are sprayed onto surfaces. They colonize the surface and competitively exclude pathogens (Salmonella, E. coli, Enterococcus, Staphylococcus). Hospital trials in Italy (the PCHS system) showed lower surface pathogen loads, less antimicrobial resistance and fewer healthcare-associated infections. Farm and hatchery applications are growing.
  4. Hoof health without formalin: better hygiene (dry floors, alley scraping), copper-free/formalin-free footbath products (e.g. peracetic-acid- or organic-acid-based), and individual topical treatment. Evidence is mixed, so it is marked partial.

Active ingredient / Composition#

  • H₂O₂ 3–7 % solutions or stabilized H₂O₂/PAA mixtures (per biocide label).
  • UV-C 254 nm.
  • Bacillus spore suspensions (about 10⁶–10⁸ CFU/mL working solution), sometimes with surfactants from renewable sources.

Key facts#

ParameterValue
ClassOxidizing biocides (degradable) / physical (UV-C) / probiotic cleaning (biological)
ResiduesH₂O₂/PAA: none persistent (water, O₂, acetic acid)
CarcinogenicityNone (versus formaldehyde, IARC Group 1)
Worker safetyCorrosive concentrates, so PPE is required, but there is no chronic carcinogenic risk

Advantages#

  • Removes a carcinogen from hatcheries and barns.
  • Chick respiratory health improves; hatchability is maintained with correct H₂O₂/PAA protocols.
  • Probiotic cleaning does not select for disinfectant or antibiotic resistance; it builds a stable, beneficial surface microbiome.

Mode of action#

  • H₂O₂/PAA: oxidation of proteins, lipids and DNA in microbes.
  • UV-C: DNA damage (thymine dimers) in microbes on surfaces and in air.
  • Probiotic Bacillus: competition for space and nutrients, biofilm replacement, and antimicrobial peptides against pathogens.

Application#

SettingTargetMeasureSpecifics

Houses between flocksSalmonella, E. coliDry cleaning → wet cleaning → H₂O₂/PAA disinfection → probiotic Bacillus sprayProbiotic spray after disinfectant has dried
Dairy hoof healthDigital dermatitisHygiene (dry alleys), formalin-free foot-bath products, individual topical treatmentPartial evidence; monitor lesion scores

Limitations#

  • H₂O₂/PAA protocols need correct concentration and contact time. Overdosing can reduce hatchability.
  • Probiotic cleaning in livestock has fewer published trials than in hospitals, so rate it as partial and validate on each farm.
  • Formalin-free foot-bath evidence is mixed.
