Additive-manufactured (3D-printed) medical devices

Devices built layer by layer from digital designs — implants, hearing aids, spine cages — with over 100 FDA-cleared devices and a Chinese technical-review guideline for customised devices.

1 · What it gives

Additive manufacturing builds an object from sequential 2D layers, allowing alternative designs without retooling and complex geometries. The FDA reports that it has cleared over 100 devices made this way and that the technology went from niche to the preferred method for hearing aids and metal spine cages. General Electric Additive received FDA clearance in 2010 and CFDA clearance in 2015 for additive manufacturing of orthopaedic implants and has produced over 100,000 hip implants.

2 · What it replaces 5

D1Bio-based plasticizers — epoxidized soybean/linseed oil (ESBO), citrate esters (ATBC), isosorbide diesters, castor-oil derivatives — instead of ortho-phthalates (DEHP, DBP, BBP, DIBP) in PVC
Replaces: Low-molecular-weight ortho-phthalate plasticizers in flexible PVC (flooring, cables, films, toys, medical tubing, food-contact gaskets)
CHEM
D1Poultry red mite (Dermanyssus gallinae) control with predatory mites (Androlaelaps casalis, Cheyletus eruditus), silica/diatomaceous earth and heat — instead of illegal fipronil and carbamate/pyrethroid sprays
Replaces: Fipronil (illegally used in 2017 — EU egg scandal), carbaryl/propoxur (carbamates), pyrethroids (cypermethrin, permethrin), organophosphates …
MACRO
D2Drone release of beneficial insects (Trichogramma, Cotesia, predatory mites) instead of insecticide sprays
Replaces: Insecticide sprays against caterpillar and mite pests, and manual walking release of natural enemies (the labour bottleneck of large-scale …
MACRO
D3Forest defoliator control (Siberian silk moth, spongy/gypsy moth, nun moth, pine moths) with Bt kurstaki, nucleopolyhedrovirus (NPV) and pheromone mating disruption — instead of aerial chemical insecticides
Replaces: Aerial spraying of pyrethroids (cypermethrin, deltamethrin), organophosphates, and chitin-synthesis inhibitors (diflubenzuron) over forests
PEST
D3Salmon lice control with cleaner fish (lumpfish, wrasse), lice-barrier cage designs ("snorkel", skirts), functional feeds and fallowing — instead of chemical bath and in-feed delousing
Replaces: Emamectin benzoate (in feed), azamethiphos (organophosphate bath), deltamethrin and cypermethrin (pyrethroid baths), …

3 · How to implement 4 steps

  1. 1
    Prepare the design file
Convert the digital design into a printable file: clean images, optimise the representation, add supports.
  2. 2
    Control materials
Require each build to use raw-material batches that meet defined specifications and biocompatibility.
  3. 3
    Post-process
Remove the device from the platform; clean, anneal, machine and assess biocompatibility.
  4. 4
    Validate the process
Validate and accept the manufacturing process and verify that outputs meet specifications.

Leading companies and institutes (from the brief)

ASME names Formlabs, EOS, General Electric Additive, Renishaw (with Croom Precision Medical) and Materialise as companies with medically enabled additive products or FDA clearance or registration.

5 · Rules & route to market

Route into Russia / EAEU: CHEM · Minpromtorg (registration) / Rospotrebnadzor (notification of new substances)
state registration ~10-15 working days after expert assessment; new substances need notification
Information, not legal advice — confirm the procedure for your product. (2026-10-06)
United States

Manufacturers must establish design controls and monitor process parameters for validated processes under the Quality System Regulation, including 21 CFR 820.30. The FDA notes open questions on characterising final devices and on validation and acceptance methods because of layer-wise fabrication, and on point-of-care printing risks (complexity, materials, post-processing, biocompatibility).

European Union

The sources reviewed on 2026-10-16 identified no the EU regulator or standard specific to this technology. Treat the route as case-by-case and ask for a check.

China

In China the NMPA issued the Guidelines for the Technical Review of the Registration of Customised Additive Manufacturing Medical Devices, with related rules for managing customised devices.

7 · Tech stack & innovations

Main risk from the FDA: uncertainty in testing and validating the process, especially in predicting device performance, which can halt innovation, investment and adoption.
