1 · What it gives

Algal biofuels are renewable fuels from microalgae and macroalgae via cultivation, harvesting, dewatering, extraction and conversion or upgrading. They are meant to replace fossil transport fuels. The technology remains pre-commercial or nascent. One study cited indicates potential for 14.1 billion gasoline-gallon-equivalents a year from algae biomass; no current market size is given.

D1Lower-toxicity textile dyeing and dye-effluent treatment with biological methods — bio-based indigo reduction and enzymatic indigo routes, microbial pigments, and biological decolorization of dye effluent — instead of sodium dithionite reduction, aniline-derived synthetic indigo and untreated/chemically treated dye effluent
Replaces: Sodium dithionite (hydrosulfite) for indigo vat reduction, synthetic indigo made from aniline (traces of aniline in dyed denim), some azo …
CHEM
D1Recovered phosphorus (struvite and other recovered phosphates from biological wastewater and digester streams) instead of fertilizer made from cadmium-bearing phosphate rock
Replaces: A share of DAP/MAP/superphosphate made from mined phosphate rock; chemical P-removal with iron and aluminium salts at treatment plants …

D2Biodiesel, renewable diesel (HVO) and SAF instead of fossil diesel and heating oil
Replaces: Fossil diesel in transport and generators; gas-oil heating; jet fuel (via SAF blends); also disciplines waste cooking oil and tallow that …
FUEL
D2Solid biofuel — pellets, briquettes and residue fuels — instead of coal in boilers and kilns
Replaces: Coal (and heavy fuel oil) in industrial boilers, brick kilns, drying operations and institutional heating; open-field burning of the same …
FUEL
D1Bio-based and safer solvents — Cyrene (dihydrolevoglucosenone from cellulose), 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (2-MeTHF from furfural/levulinic acid), ethyl lactate, bio-ethanol, γ-valerolactone, limonene — instead of NMP, DMF, DMAc, dichloromethane and other hazardous solvents
Replaces: N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), dimethylacetamide (DMAc), dichloromethane (DCM), chloroform, toluene/xylene in …
CHEM
D1Biochar made by clean pyrolysis of crop, forestry and processing residues — used as a soil amendment and sold as durable carbon removal — instead of open burning, dumping or landfilling of those residues
Replaces: Open burning of straw, husks, shells and prunings; dumping and landfilling of processing residues; traditional earth-kiln charcoal making …

3 · How to implement 4 steps

  1. 1
    Cultivation
    Cultivate the algae.
  2. 2
    Harvest and dewater
Harvest the biomass and remove water.
  3. 3
    Extraction
Extract the oil or biomass fraction.
  4. 4
    Conversion and upgrading
    Convert and upgrade to fuel.
