Arachidonic acid (ARA, 20:4n-6) is the principal omega-6 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid of human milk, where it appears alongside DHA and supports early brain, visual and immune development. It cannot be economically extracted from plants or fish at food grade, so the commercial supply is microbial: the filamentous fungus Mortierella alpina is grown in submerged fermentation, accumulates ARA-rich single-cell oil inside its mycelium, and the oil is extracted, refined and either sold as a neutral oil or spray-dried into a cold-water-soluble powder for dry-blended formula. This article covers the firms that ferment and refine ARA itself, and it is bounded against two siblings. Microalgal omega-3 owns the omega-3 side — DHA and EPA from Crypthecodinium and Schizochytrium algae; DSM-Firmenich and Kingdomway are tabled there for algal DHA, and they appear again here for a different molecule made by a different organism in a different plant. Precision-fermented infant formula owns the protein side — lactoferrin, HMOs and milk proteins, not lipids. The industry is unusually concentrated and unusually Chinese: three of the four merchant producers are in China, and the West retains a single end-to-end supplier.
The key directions of ARA microbial synthesis are:
- Fungal fermentation ARA oil (Mortierella Fermentation): submerged culture of Mortierella alpina on glucose and nitrogen feeds, accumulating ARA as triglyceride in the mycelium, then solvent or mechanical extraction to a crude single-cell oil — the core process for every producer in the table.
- Cold-water-soluble ARA powder (Microencapsulated ARA): refined oil emulsified with a protein or starch wall material and spray-dried into a free-flowing powder that survives dry blending into formula base, sold at nominal 10 % ARA alongside 40 % oils.
- ARA:DHA ratio formulation (Breast-Milk Lipid Matching): ARA is rarely sold alone — it is supplied against a target ratio to DHA so the finished formula reflects the balance found in human milk, which makes the two lipid lines commercially inseparable even though they come from different organisms.
- Regulatory and quality qualification (Novel Food / GRAS / GB 14880): ARA for infant use must clear EU Novel Food authorisation, US FDA GRAS notification and China’s GB 14880 fortifier standard, and — since the 2026 infant-formula recall coverage put supplier testing under scrutiny — must sustain an auditable contaminant and quality regime.

Cross-cutting technologies of the sector:
- Oleaginous fungal cell factories (Single-Cell Oil): Mortierella alpina is one of the few organisms that accumulates a long-chain omega-6 to a commercially useful fraction of its dry mass, which is why the whole industry converges on one genus rather than competing chassis.
- Lipid refining for infant grade (Food-Grade Refining): the purification train — degumming, bleaching, winterisation, deodorisation — sets the sensory and contaminant profile that infant-formula qualification actually turns on.
- Spray-dried encapsulation (CWS Powder): wall-material chemistry and drying conditions determine oxidative stability and dispersibility, and are the practical difference between an oil supplier and a formula ingredient supplier.
02US
The United States is the demand and regulatory centre of the ARA trade rather than a production base: infant-formula manufacture and the FDA GRAS pathway sit here, but the fermentation capacity does not.
Martek heritage, FDA GRAS, no domestic merchant producer
- The originating platform was American and is now Dutch-owned. ARASCO®, the Mortierella-derived ARA oil that established the category for infant formula, originated with Martek Biosciences and passed to DSM through its 2011 acquisition; the product line is now sold by DSM-Firmenich as life’s®ARA. No independent US merchant ARA fermenter has been confirmed in this screen.
- GRAS is the gate, not a production incentive. ARA for infant use enters the US market through FDA GRAS notification, which qualifies an ingredient irrespective of where it was fermented — so the regulatory burden falls on the dossier holder while the capacity stays offshore.
- Supplier scrutiny rose in 2026. Coverage of infant-formula recalls turned attention onto how brands inspect their ARA and DHA suppliers, pushing auditability and contaminant testing up the purchasing criteria for a category that had competed mainly on price and ratio.

China is where ARA is actually made. Three of the four merchant producers in the table are Chinese, spanning a listed specialist, a diversified nutrition group and a group subsidiary.
Cabio, Kingdomway, Hubei Fuxin, fermentation capacity
- Cabio Biotech (嘉必优, Wuhan, SHA:688362) sells 嘉必优®ARA, describing it as an omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid obtained by biosynthetic technology, and states it was the first product of its kind in China to clear both EU Novel Food and US FDA GRAS review. Applications named on its own product pages run from infant formula and health foods to liquid milk, yoghurt and special medical-purpose foods.
- Kingdomway (金达威, Xiamen, SZ:002626) lists ARA as one of its five core product series alongside coenzyme Q10, vitamin D3, vitamin A and DHA. Its ARA position rests on manufacturing rather than branding: an invention patent for a method of producing arachidonic acid in the field of fermentation engineering was granted to the company and its wholly-owned subsidiary Inner Mongolia Kingdomway Pharmaceutical, and an Inner Mongolia environmental-authority verification record documents a microbial-fermentation ARA project rated at 250 tonnes/year.
- Hubei Fuxin Biotechnology (湖北福星生物科技, Hanchuan) is a subsidiary of the Fuxing group and describes itself as a specialist in the development, production and sale of polyunsaturated fatty acids, with fermentation-produced arachidonic acid and microalgal DHA as its main products; its catalogue lists ARA oil, ARA powder, DHA oil and microalgal DHA powder.
- Cargill Alking Bioengineering (嘉吉烯王, Wuhan) appears across Chinese trade listings with specific ARA product codes for oil and powder grades and is credible as a further Wuhan producer, but no reachable page on a domain of its own was found in this screen, so it is named here rather than tabled.
04EU
Europe holds the Western incumbent and the strictest authorisation route, but a single production position rather than a cluster.
DSM-Firmenich, EU Novel Food, infant-formula composition rules
- DSM-Firmenich (Netherlands) supplies life’s®ARA, also referenced as microbial ARASCO®, from a plant-based fungal source into infant nutrition, and states on its own nutritional-lipids pages that it is the only end-to-end western-based provider of arachidonic acid, not relying on fermentation, crude oil or intermediate materials from third-party suppliers — a vertical-integration claim that is also the clearest statement of how thin the non-Chinese supply base is.
- Novel Food is the European gate. ARA oil for food use is authorised through Regulation 2015/2283, and Delegated Regulation 2016/127 governs infant-formula composition, so a producer’s European market access is a dossier position as much as a plant position.
- The lipid pair drives the sale. European formula makers buy ARA against a DHA ratio designed to reflect human milk, which is why the Western supplier of record for ARA is also a major algal-DHA supplier and why the two product lines are marketed together.

06Tech stack and innovations
- The organism is the moat.
- Mortierella alpina accumulates ARA as a large fraction of mycelial triglyceride, and yield improvement is strain and process work — feed profile, dissolved oxygen, temperature staging — rather than pathway novelty.
- Because every merchant producer runs the same genus, competition is on titre, refining quality and regulatory position, not on a proprietary route.
- Downstream decides the product.
- Refining sets sensory and contaminant profile: an ARA oil that fails odour or oxidation criteria cannot enter formula regardless of titre.
- Microencapsulation converts the oil into a dry-blendable powder; nominal grades cluster at ~40 % oil and ~10 % powder, the forms quoted across the trade.
- Regulatory assets are production assets.
- EU Novel Food authorisation and US FDA GRAS notification are slow, dossier-heavy and firm-specific, so clearing both — as Cabio states it did first among Chinese producers — is a durable commercial position.
- China’s GB 14880 fortifier standard and NMPA formula registration govern the domestic market where most capacity sits.
- Vertical integration is the Western answer to scale.
- DSM-Firmenich’s stated end-to-end control, avoiding third-party fermentation and intermediates, is a supply-security proposition aimed at formula makers who need traceability across the whole chain.

A high-yield Mortierella alpina line is revived from the culture bank and propagated through seed stages to production volume; the output is a production inoculum.
Stage 2: Submerged fermentation

- DSM-Firmenich and Kingdomway also appear in Microalgal omega-3, tabled there for algal DHA from Crypthecodinium and Schizochytrium — a different molecule from a different organism, which is why both are tabled here as well.
Processing note:
- Supply is geographically lopsided: three of four tabled producers are Chinese, and DSM-Firmenich states it is the only end-to-end western-based supplier. Buyers wanting non-Chinese supply have essentially one option, which is a concentration risk worth pricing.
- Kingdomway’s position rests on manufacturing evidence — a production-method patent and an Inner Mongolia environmental verification for a 250 t/yr fermentation project — rather than on trade listings, which for this category are dominated by resellers and should not be read as producer evidence.
- Hubei Fuxin is carried at medium confidence: its own site confirms fermentation-produced ARA and a product catalogue, but capacity and financial detail were not confirmable.
