Martek heritage, FDA GRAS, no domestic merchant producer

  • The originating platform was American and is now Dutch-owned. ARASCO®, the Mortierella-derived ARA oil that established the category for infant formula, originated with Martek Biosciences and passed to DSM through its 2011 acquisition; the product line is now sold by DSM-Firmenich as life’s®ARA. No independent US merchant ARA fermenter has been confirmed in this screen.
  • GRAS is the gate, not a production incentive. ARA for infant use enters the US market through FDA GRAS notification, which qualifies an ingredient irrespective of where it was fermented — so the regulatory burden falls on the dossier holder while the capacity stays offshore.

  • Cabio Biotech (嘉必优, Wuhan, SHA:688362) sells 嘉必优®ARA, describing it as an omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid obtained by biosynthetic technology, and states it was the first product of its kind in China to clear both EU Novel Food and US FDA GRAS review. Applications named on its own product pages run from infant formula and health foods to liquid milk, yoghurt and special medical-purpose foods.
  • Kingdomway (金达威, Xiamen, SZ:002626) lists ARA as one of its five core product series alongside coenzyme Q10, vitamin D3, vitamin A and DHA. Its ARA position rests on manufacturing rather than branding: an invention patent for a method of producing arachidonic acid in the field of fermentation engineering was granted to the company and its wholly-owned subsidiary Inner Mongolia Kingdomway Pharmaceutical, and an Inner Mongolia environmental-authority verification record documents a microbial-fermentation ARA project rated at 250 tonnes/year.
  • Hubei Fuxin Biotechnology (湖北福星生物科技, Hanchuan) is a subsidiary of the Fuxing group and describes itself as a specialist in the development, production and sale of polyunsaturated fatty acids, with fermentation-produced arachidonic acid and microalgal DHA as its main products; its catalogue lists ARA oil, ARA powder, DHA oil and microalgal DHA powder.

Europe holds the Western incumbent and the strictest authorisation route, but a single production position rather than a cluster.

DSM-Firmenich, EU Novel Food, infant-formula composition rules
