Assisted migration & climate-adapted reforestation

Moving plant material to climatically suitable sites and choosing seed for the future climate rather than only local seed sources — in an early, research-led stage in the US and Canada.

1 · What it gives

Assisted migration is the human-assisted movement of plants or animals to more climatically suitable habitats. In forestry it replaces reforestation that relies only on local seed sources. The Forest Assisted Migration framework has four sequential phases: assessment and analysis, climate-based selection of plant material, seed procurement and deployment, and documentation and monitoring. The field is still in its infancy: forest assisted-migration research and operations are described as early, with long-term studies under way as of 2023.

2 · What it replaces 6

D1Plant biostimulants (seaweed extracts, protein hydrolysates, humic and fulvic substances) instead of extra mineral nitrogen and synthetic plant growth regulators for stress
Replaces: Insurance" top-ups of mineral N and foliar NPK applied to carry crops through drought, heat or transplant stress; part of the synthetic …
AGROCHEM
D3Genomic selection in dairy cattle breeding instead of progeny testing
Replaces: Progeny testing — choosing AI bulls only after their daughters' milk records were available (5–6 years per bull and large testing costs)
BREED
D1Nitrogen-fixing and nutrient-mobilizing microbes (Azospirillum, Azotobacter, engineered root-associated diazotrophs) for maize, wheat and rice instead of part of the urea dose
Replaces: Part (typically 10–25 %) of the mineral N (urea, UAN, ammonium nitrate) applied to non-legume cereals
AGROCHEM
D1Spruce bark beetle (Ips typographus) and pine beetle management by early sanitation felling, pheromone monitoring, anti-aggregation pheromones and forest diversification — instead of insecticide-treated trap logs, nets and log-pile spraying
Replaces: Pyrethroid (cypermethrin, alpha-cypermethrin)-treated trap logs, insecticide-netted log piles, spraying of timber stacks; historically …
PEST
D2Drone release of beneficial insects (Trichogramma, Cotesia, predatory mites) instead of insecticide sprays
Replaces: Insecticide sprays against caterpillar and mite pests, and manual walking release of natural enemies (the labour bottleneck of large-scale …
MACRO
D1Enteric methane from cattle and sheep reduced by bromoform-containing red seaweed (Asparagopsis), essential-oil and plant-extract feed additives, and low-methane genetics — instead of unabated emissions and synthetic inhibitors alone
Replaces: Unabated enteric methane; reliance on the synthetic inhibitor 3-nitrooxypropanol (3-NOP) as the only approved tool; ionophore antibiotics …

3 · How to implement 4 steps

  1. 1
    Assess
Assess the site and analyse the projected climate (phase 1 of the four-phase Forest Assisted Migration framework).
  2. 2
    Select plant material
Select plant material on climate grounds (phase 2).
  3. 3
    Procure and deploy seed
Procure seed and deploy it on the site (phase 3).
  4. 4
    Document and monitor
Document what was planted and monitor survival and performance (phase 4).

Leading companies and institutes (from the brief)

Delivering or piloting bodies named in the sources: USDA Forest Service and Superior National Forest, Natural Resources Canada, and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. Nurseries, seed suppliers and monitoring providers are matched by the portal under Ecosystem Restoration and Forestry.

5 · Rules & route to market

Route into Russia / EAEU: AGROCHEM · Ministry of Agriculture (Minselkhoz)
about 1-2 years incl. registration trials
Information, not legal advice — confirm the procedure for your product. (2026-10-06)
United States

Rules are set by forest authorities rather than one federal regulator. British Columbia’s Ministry of Forests applies a Climate Based Seed Transfer policy to guide seed selection. Delivery and pilots sit with the USDA Forest Service (for example Superior National Forest), Natural Resources Canada and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources.

European Union

The sources reviewed on 2026-10-16 identified no the EU regulator or standard specific to this technology. Treat the route as case-by-case and ask for a check.

The sources reviewed on 2026-10-16 identified no China regulator or standard specific to this technology. Treat the route as case-by-case and ask for a check.

6 · Money: tenders & grants

7 · Tech stack & innovations

Main risks from the sources: introduced species affecting the host environment, a species becoming invasive, and loss of investment through mortality if the population is not well adapted. The risk rating here is high because the practice is still early.
