Bio-based consumer goods

Everyday products made wholly or partly from biomass — bags, meal boxes, packaging — that replace fossil plastics; certified by conformity assessment, with the US BioPreferred programme using ASTM D6866; still about 1 % of plastic capacity (2 million tonnes) in 2022.

1 · What it gives

Bio-based products are items fully or partly made from renewable organic raw material, i.e. biomass. Bio-based and biodegradable plastics are meant to replace fossil-based plastics in packaging and consumer goods. They are at scale in places: the biodegradable-materials industry in Nanjie County, Henan, produces shopping bags and meal boxes at set capacities. Globally these plastics were over 2 million tonnes a year, about 1 % of plastic capacity, in 2022.

2 · What it replaces 6

D1Bio-based and soil-biodegradable plastics instead of fossil commodity plastics (PET, LDPE, PS) and their microplastics
Replaces: Fossil polyethylene/polypropylene/PS/PET in flexible and rigid packaging; intentional microplastics (restricted in the EU since 2023); …
PACK
D1Grease- and water-resistant food packaging without PFAS — dense molded fibre, glassine/high-density paper, and bio-based barrier coatings (chitosan, alginate, starch, proteins, plant waxes, PHA dispersions)
Replaces: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) used in molded-fibre bowls, fast-food wrappers, microwave-popcorn bags, bakery papers, pet-food …
PACK
D1Bio-based plasticizers — epoxidized soybean/linseed oil (ESBO), citrate esters (ATBC), isosorbide diesters, castor-oil derivatives — instead of ortho-phthalates (DEHP, DBP, BBP, DIBP) in PVC
Replaces: Low-molecular-weight ortho-phthalate plasticizers in flexible PVC (flooring, cables, films, toys, medical tubing, food-contact gaskets)
CHEM
D1Insect meal, single-cell protein and algal ingredients instead of fishmeal and soybean meal in feed
Replaces: Fishmeal from reduction fisheries (anchoveta, sandeel); soybean meal from deforestation frontiers (with antinutritional factors and …
FEED
D1Recovered phosphorus (struvite and other recovered phosphates from biological wastewater and digester streams) instead of fertilizer made from cadmium-bearing phosphate rock
Replaces: A share of DAP/MAP/superphosphate made from mined phosphate rock; chemical P-removal with iron and aluminium salts at treatment plants …
AGROCHEM
D1Biochar made by clean pyrolysis of crop, forestry and processing residues — used as a soil amendment and sold as durable carbon removal — instead of open burning, dumping or landfilling of those residues
Replaces: Open burning of straw, husks, shells and prunings; dumping and landfilling of processing residues; traditional earth-kiln charcoal making …

3 · How to implement 3 steps

  1. 1
    Design and type test
Design the product and carry out type testing.
  2. 2
    Lab sampling and conformity
Take laboratory samples and run conformity assessment.
  3. 3
    Monitor production
    Monitor ongoing production for compliance.

Xinghan Bio and Hongye Bio are named as producers of bio-based and degradable materials in China; DIN CERTCO is named for conformity assessment. Others are matched by the portal under Consumer & retail.

5 · Rules & route to market

Route into Russia / EAEU: PACK · EAEU accredited bodies
declaration; up to ~6-7 months if biodegradability claims need testing
Information, not legal advice — confirm the procedure for your product. (2026-10-06)
United States

In the United States the USDA BioPreferred programme uses ASTM D6866 for biobased content certification and labelling.

6 · Money: tenders & grants

7 · Tech stack & innovations

Main risks from the sources: higher production cost and consumer resistance from ingrained habits with conventional plastic.
