Bio-based PET (PlantBottle)

PET made partly or fully from plant-derived materials with the same properties as fossil PET — pilots from 2015 and commercial bottles such as Suntory's 45 million units with bio-paraxylene in 2024.

1 · What it gives

Bio-based PET, exemplified by the PlantBottle, is PET made partly or entirely from plant-derived renewable materials with the same properties as fossil PET, intended to replace virgin fossil PET in packaging. Pilot projects began around 2015 and commercialisation has accelerated into the 2020s. In 2024 Suntory Group introduced PET bottles using bio-paraxylene for about 45 million beverage units in Japan.

D2Fermentation- and sugar-derived platform chemicals (lactic acid, succinic acid, 1,3-propanediol, 1,4-butanediol, bio-ethylene and bio-MEG) instead of the same building blocks made from oil and gas
Replaces: Petrochemical routes to the same molecules — maleic-anhydride-based succinic acid and BDO, acrolein/ethylene-oxide-based propanediol, …
CHEM
D1On-farm and regional biofactories (multiplication units, media, quality control) for microbial bio-inputs — Bacillus, Trichoderma, Beauveria, Bt, beneficial insects — instead of importing finished chemical pesticides and fertilizers
Replaces: Imported finished synthetic pesticides and part of mineral fertilizer programmes; also imported finished biologicals with long cold chains
EAC
D1Bio-based and soil-biodegradable plastics instead of fossil commodity plastics (PET, LDPE, PS) and their microplastics
Replaces: Fossil polyethylene/polypropylene/PS/PET in flexible and rigid packaging; intentional microplastics (restricted in the EU since 2023); …

D2Biodiesel, renewable diesel (HVO) and SAF instead of fossil diesel and heating oil
Replaces: Fossil diesel in transport and generators; gas-oil heating; jet fuel (via SAF blends); also disciplines waste cooking oil and tallow that …

D3Bioethanol as fuel and octane/oxygenate instead of MTBE, high-aromatic petrol and fossil petrol
Replaces: MTBE and ETBE oxygenates (groundwater pollutant), aromatics (benzene, toluene) used for octane, lead anti-knock legacy; part of fossil …

3 · How to implement 3 steps

  1. 1
    Source plant feedstock
    Source plant-derived feedstock.
  2. 2
    Make intermediates
Convert it into bio-based intermediates such as monoethylene glycol or paraxylene.
  3. 3
    Make PET
Convert paraxylene to terephthalic acid and polymerise to PET.
