Bioeconomy measurement & accounting
Satellite accounts and indicators that capture bioeconomy activity standard industry classes miss — in the EU-27 and UK the bioeconomy was 8.6 % of value added in 2016–2018; the FAO offers a Bioeconomy Toolbox and NIST maintains a lexicon.
1 · What it gives
The bioeconomy is economic activity derived from the life sciences, especially biotechnology and biomanufacturing. Measurement and accounting aim to capture contributions that standard classifications such as NAICS do not identify, by building a satellite account from supply-use tables. A technique to measure EU bioeconomy value added has been implemented across Member States; for the EU-27 and UK the bioeconomy share of value added was 8.6 % in 2016–2018.

| D1 | Biochar made by clean pyrolysis of crop, forestry and processing residues — used as a soil amendment and sold as durable carbon removal — instead of open burning, dumping or landfilling of those residues Replaces: Open burning of straw, husks, shells and prunings; dumping and landfilling of processing residues; traditional earth-kiln charcoal making … | AGROCHEM |
| D3 | Biogas and biomethane from organic waste instead of firewood, charcoal, LPG and diesel Replaces: Firewood, charcoal and dung as cooking fuel (household air pollution); fossil LPG and natural gas for cooking and heat; diesel-generator … | FUEL |
| D3 | Fish vaccination (plus biosecurity and probiotics) instead of prophylactic/metaphylactic antibiotics in finfish aquaculture Replaces: Oxytetracycline, florfenicol, oxolinic acid, flumequine, enrofloxacin, sulfonamide–trimethoprim added to fish feed; illegal chloramphenicol … | VET |
| D1 | Landfill gas and organic-waste biomethane instead of flaring, fugitive methane and fossil gas Replaces: Flared or vented landfill/dump methane; untapped organic-waste methane (open dumps common across this index's regions); fossil natural gas … | FUEL |
3 · How to implement 3 steps
- 1Find productsIdentify bioeconomy product categories in supply-use tables.
- 2Isolate sharesIsolate the relevant share of economic activity.
- 3Compute valueDetermine the economic activity and report the satellite account.
