Bioresorbable scaffolds & new implant devices

Vessel scaffolds that support the artery for a while and then dissolve, to avoid the permanent metal cage of drug-eluting stents — mixed record: Absorb was withdrawn, newer devices such as Firesorb and NeoVas have approvals.

1 · What it gives

Bioresorbable scaffolds (BRS) give temporary support to diseased blood vessels and then fully degrade in the body. They were introduced to overcome the limits of metallic drug-eluting stents, such as permanent caging of the vessel. The technology is at mixed stages: some early devices (Absorb) were withdrawn, while newer ones (Firesorb, NeoVas) have received regulatory approvals.

2 · What it replaces 6

D1Acid mine drainage and metal-rich mine water treatment with passive biological systems — sulfate-reducing bioreactors, compost wetlands, aerobic wetlands — instead of perpetual lime dosing
Replaces: Active chemical treatment with lime/caustic soda (high-volume metal hydroxide sludge, continuous chemical and energy use), or no treatment …
SERV
D1Bio-based plasticizers — epoxidized soybean/linseed oil (ESBO), citrate esters (ATBC), isosorbide diesters, castor-oil derivatives — instead of ortho-phthalates (DEHP, DBP, BBP, DIBP) in PVC
Replaces: Low-molecular-weight ortho-phthalate plasticizers in flexible PVC (flooring, cables, films, toys, medical tubing, food-contact gaskets)
CHEM
D2Composting and anaerobic digestion of separately collected biowaste instead of landfill
Replaces: Landfilling of food and garden waste (methane emissions, leachate) and its incineration with mixed waste
SERV
D1Metal-contaminated soils, mine tailings and smelter sites managed by phytostabilization, phytoextraction and rhizoremediation (gentle remediation options) instead of excavation, soil washing and inert capping
Replaces: Excavation and disposal of metal-contaminated topsoil; chemical soil washing (acids, chelators such as EDTA); bare tailings covered with …
SERV
D1Biosurfactants (rhamnolipids, sophorolipids) instead of petrochemical surfactants in cleaning and industrial formulation
Replaces: Petrochemical surfactants in cleaners and formulations - linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS), alcohol ethoxylates (AEO), alkylphenol …
CHEM
D2Bumblebee pollination instead of hormone sprays and manual vibration in greenhouse tomatoes
Replaces: Fruit-setting hormone sprays (synthetic auxins such as 4-CPA / tomatotone) and labour-intensive manual flower vibration in greenhouse …

3 · How to implement 3 steps

  1. 1
    Predilate
Predilate with a non-compliant balloon matched to the vessel diameter.
  2. 2
    Implant
Implant the scaffold only after full balloon expansion is confirmed.
  3. 3
    Follow up
Follow the device as it resorbs.

In China, bioresorbable scaffold devices are regulated by the NMPA.

6 · Money: tenders & grants

7 · Tech stack & innovations

Main risk from the sources: higher cost together with no clear clinical superiority over contemporary drug-eluting stents limits adoption.
