Botanical-garden & seed-vault visitor technology

Smartphone apps that identify plants from photos, match them to a garden's own collection and add facts, quizzes and a personal collection — from prototypes to live apps such as Bogor's JAWARA.

1 · What it gives

A technology-enabled botanical-garden visit helps visitors explore plants and collections on site while collecting personal artefacts and learning. It replaces purely paper- or staff-based interpretation by moving plant identification and learning support onto smartphones. Maturity ranges from prototypes (BotaXplore) to live apps: Bogor Botanic Gardens’ JAWARA had 1,461 downloads from April 2018 to April 2019, peaking in June–July.

2 · What it replaces 6

D1Process equipment for residue-to-product plants — anaerobic digesters and biogas upgrading, composting turners and granulation lines, biomass pelleting, pyrolysis and carbonization kilns — instead of incinerators, landfill, open lagoons and open burning
Replaces: Landfill and open dumping of organic waste; open burning of crop residues; open anaerobic lagoons; incineration of wet organic waste
EAC
D3Biomass district heating instead of heating oil and coal
Replaces: Heating oil and coal in district-heating and combined heat-and-power plants
FUEL
D2Composting and anaerobic digestion of separately collected biowaste instead of landfill
Replaces: Landfilling of food and garden waste (methane emissions, leachate) and its incineration with mixed waste
SERV
D2Crop residues (rice and wheat straw, cane trash) managed by in-situ incorporation with microbial decomposers, mulching and collection for biogas/bio-CNG instead of open-field burning
Replaces: Open burning of rice/wheat straw and sugarcane trash to clear fields between crops; pre-harvest cane burning
AGROCHEM
D3Odour, H₂S, ammonia and VOC emissions treated by biofilters, biotrickling filters and bioscrubbers instead of chemical scrubbers (caustic/hypochlorite/acid) and thermal oxidizers
Replaces: Chemical scrubbers dosing sodium hydroxide, sodium hypochlorite and sulfuric acid; regenerative/thermal oxidizers burning gas to destroy …
EAC
D3Biogas and biomethane from organic waste instead of firewood, charcoal, LPG and diesel
Replaces: Firewood, charcoal and dung as cooking fuel (household air pollution); fossil LPG and natural gas for cooking and heat; diesel-generator …

3 · How to implement 4 steps

  1. 1
    Capture and identify
Capture a plant image on a mobile device and run photo-based identification.
  2. 2
    Match to the collection
Match results against the garden’s own plant database to keep content local.
  3. 3
    Teach
Provide plant facts and quizzes generated from the retrieved information.
  4. 4
    Collect and guide
Save scanned plants to a personal collection and offer tour-based, semi-guided and exploratory modes.
