Clean (blue & green) ammonia for fertilizers

Ammonia made with captured CO2 (blue) or from renewable electricity and water (green) in place of unabated grey ammonia — small but scaling, with announced renewable projects equal to about 8 % of today's global ammonia market by 2030.

1 · What it gives

Blue ammonia is chemically identical to grey ammonia but its CO2 emissions are captured or stored; green ammonia is made by electrolysis with renewable electricity and water, with no CO2 emissions. Clean ammonia replaces conventional grey ammonia made from hydrocarbons without capture. Renewable ammonia has been made since 1921, but capacity is small and scaling was at an early stage as of 2022; announced projects total 15 Mt by 2030, about 8 % of the current global ammonia market.

D1Manure methane, ammonia and odour cut by anaerobic digestion with covered storage, low-protein diets balanced with fermentation amino acids, and biological air treatment of livestock houses — instead of open lagoons, sulfuric-acid slurry acidification and masking agents
Replaces: Open anaerobic lagoons and uncovered slurry stores; slurry acidification with concentrated sulfuric acid; chemical masking/neutralizing …

3 · How to implement 3 steps

  1. 1
    Electrolyse water
For green ammonia, electrolyse water with renewable electricity.
  2. 2
    Separate gases
    Separate hydrogen from oxygen.
  3. 3
    Integrate
Integrate with ammonia synthesis, possibly in modular or distributed units.
