Continuous bioreactors & perfusion culture

Bioreactors that feed fresh medium and remove product continuously while keeping the cells in — replacing batch manufacturing, commercially mature in perfusion culture, with reported productivity gains of 400–500 %.

1 · What it gives

A continuous bioreactor supports continuous cell culture and product formation: fresh medium is added and spent medium and product removed while the cells are retained. Continuous bioprocessing replaces traditional batch manufacturing. Continuous perfusion cell culture is commercially mature, with implementations in use since at least 2015. Integrated continuous bioprocessing is reported to give productivity gains of 400–500 % and cost reductions of about 15 % against batch.

3 · How to implement 5 steps

  1. 1
    Inoculum
    Prepare the inoculum.
  2. 2
    Single-use bioreactor
Transfer the inoculum to a single-use bioreactor.
  3. 3
    Perfusion culture
Run perfusion culture with continuous media exchange.
  4. 4
    Harvest with cell retention
Harvest the product continuously while retaining the cells.
  5. 5
    Continuous downstream
Feed the harvest to automated continuous downstream processing.
