1 · What it gives

Bioethanol and FAME biodiesel are the largest part of the biofuel market and are produced at commercial scale in several regions. They are usually driven by blending mandates or tax incentives, and their economics depend on feedstock price. This page covers first-generation fuels; second-generation and drop-in fuels are on the cellulosic-ethanol and advanced-biofuels pages.

  1. Feedstock supply: Sugarcane, maize, other grains or oilseeds and used cooking oil are collected and stored.
  2. Conversion: Ethanol: milling or extraction, enzymatic saccharification of starch, fermentation and distillation. Biodiesel: transesterification of oils with methanol.
  3. Purification and co-products: Dehydrate ethanol, wash and dry biodiesel; sell co-products such as distillers grains, glycerol or sugarcane bagasse.
  4. Blending and distribution: Blend to the mandated share and deliver through fuel terminals to retail.
