1 · What it gives

Extremophiles are organisms that thrive in conditions once thought incompatible with life, such as boiling hydrothermal vents or frozen polar deserts, and are a major source of enzymes. The process runs from sample collection in extreme environments, isolation and purification, identification and banking, to genetic sequencing and engineering. They replace conventional biological resources and chemical catalysts in industrial synthesis. Some products, such as Taq polymerase, are commercially established; broad commercial production of others is still developing.

D1Fermentation (stainless and single-use bioreactors, solid-state reactors) and downstream equipment (centrifuges, filtration, spray and fluid-bed drying, formulation) for local production of enzymes, microbial products and fermentation ingredients instead of chemical-synthesis plants and imports
Replaces: Chemical-synthesis routes and imports for the products in FI-, FD-, I- and A-series articles (enzymes, organic acids, vitamins, microbial …
EAC
D1Recovered phosphorus (struvite and other recovered phosphates from biological wastewater and digester streams) instead of fertilizer made from cadmium-bearing phosphate rock
Replaces: A share of DAP/MAP/superphosphate made from mined phosphate rock; chemical P-removal with iron and aluminium salts at treatment plants …
AGROCHEM
D2Composting and anaerobic digestion of separately collected biowaste instead of landfill
Replaces: Landfilling of food and garden waste (methane emissions, leachate) and its incineration with mixed waste
SERV
D2Enzymatic degumming (phospholipases) and enzymatic interesterification (immobilized lipases) of edible oils instead of acid–caustic chemical degumming and sodium-methoxide chemical interesterification
Replaces: Phosphoric/citric acid plus caustic soda degumming and neutralization (soapstock, wastewater, oil losses); chemical interesterification with …
FOOD
D2Industrial biocatalysis (enzymes and whole cells) — e.g. nitrile hydratase for acrylamide, engineered transaminase for sitagliptin, enzymatic antibiotic side-chain processes — instead of heavy-metal catalysts, high-pressure hydrogenation and multistep chemistry with toxic reagents
Replaces: Copper-catalysed sulfuric-acid hydration of acrylonitrile; rhodium-catalysed high-pressure asymmetric hydrogenation; chemical deacylation of …
CHEM
D2Mosquito and blackfly control with Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) and Lysinibacillus sphaericus larvicides, source reduction, and plant-based repellents — instead of organophosphate larvicides and pyrethroid space fogging
Replaces: Temephos and other organophosphate larvicides (fenthion, chlorpyrifos, malathion), pyrethroid/OP ULV fogging (deltamethrin, cypermethrin, …
