1 · What it gives

Fermentation-derived nutraceuticals are specialty food ingredients made with bacteria, fungi, yeast or algae that turn raw materials into targeted nutritional compounds. They serve as an alternative to chemical synthesis and to extraction from plants or animals. Industrial-scale production is established for some ingredients: Kyowa Hakko Bio produced 2FL HMO from about 2000. The European food-supplement market was valued at USD 14.95 billion in 2019 and projected at USD 33.80 billion by 2027.

3 · How to implement 3 steps

  1. 1
    Select the microbe
    Select the microorganism.
  2. 2
    Ferment
Grow it on suitable substrates in a fermenter under controlled conditions.
  3. 3
    Separate and purify
Separate the target ingredient from the biomass and purify it.
