Germplasm genebanks & breeding platforms

Integrated systems that collect, register, store, identify and share breeding germplasm — China's national crop platform began trial operation in August 2025 and its pig platform covers 75 % of national core breeding stock and over 978 farms.

1 · What it gives

Germplasm genebanks and breeding platforms are integrated systems that improve germplasm management, resource sharing and breeding innovation across collection, identification and use. They replace inefficient, decentralised, manual resource management and dependence on foreign breeding platforms. The National Crop Germplasm Resources Information Platform began trial operation in August 2025; the pig breeding platform covers 75 % of national core breeding stock, is used by over 978 farms with 1.06 million sows and influences a production system of 300 million commodity pigs.

D1Bio-based binders and bio-solvents instead of petrochemical resins and VOC solvent systems in paints and coatings
Replaces: Petro-derived alkyd/acrylic binders; volatile organic solvent systems (white spirit, toluene, xylene) in solvent-borne paints; part of …
CHEM
D1Constructed (treatment) wetlands for villages, farms, small towns and stormwater — instead of chemical precipitation, chlorination of effluent, or discharge of untreated wastewater
Replaces: Chlorination of small-plant effluents (chlorinated by-products), chemical phosphorus precipitation with iron/aluminium salts at small scale, …
SERV
D1Enteric methane from cattle and sheep reduced by bromoform-containing red seaweed (Asparagopsis), essential-oil and plant-extract feed additives, and low-methane genetics — instead of unabated emissions and synthetic inhibitors alone
Replaces: Unabated enteric methane; reliance on the synthetic inhibitor 3-nitrooxypropanol (3-NOP) as the only approved tool; ionophore antibiotics …
FEED
D2Fermentation- and sugar-derived platform chemicals (lactic acid, succinic acid, 1,3-propanediol, 1,4-butanediol, bio-ethylene and bio-MEG) instead of the same building blocks made from oil and gas
Replaces: Petrochemical routes to the same molecules — maleic-anhydride-based succinic acid and BDO, acrolein/ethylene-oxide-based propanediol, …
CHEM
D3Glutamate and MSG by bacterial fermentation instead of protein hydrolysis and chemical synthesis
Replaces: Hydrolysis of wheat gluten or soybean protein with hydrochloric acid (1909–1960s); acrylonitrile-based chemical synthesis (Japan, …
FOOD
D1Plant-based meat and dairy analogues and cultivated (cell-cultured) meat and seafood instead of a share of conventional meat and its antibiotic, antiparasitic and feed-chain chemical inputs
Replaces: A share of conventional meat, seafood and dairy — and the antibiotics, antiparasitics, feed-crop pesticides and fertilizer of the animal …

3 · How to implement 4 steps

  1. 1
    Investigate and collect
    Survey and collect resources.
  2. 2
    Register and store
Register and exchange resources, and store them securely.
  3. 3
    Identify and mine
Identify and mine the resources precisely.
  4. 4
    Share and feed back
Handle access applications and collect utilisation feedback.
