Green walls & living facades

Vertical greening systems — from climbing plants on a facade to modular living walls — that replace conventional cladding with a vegetated building envelope; commercial and still a small share of the facade market.

1 · What it gives

Vertical greening systems (VGS) support vegetation growing on a building facade or wall, from simple climbers to modular living walls with engineered substrates. They act as an alternative to conventional cladding in stone, concrete or fibre cement, turning a flat finish into an active, vegetated envelope. The technology is a mix of pilot and commercial: monitored pilots such as an 850 m² wall installed in 2010, and field tests of bioreceptive concrete panels running since 2021. VGS is estimated at 1–2 % of the global facade market.

D1Plant-based meat and dairy analogues and cultivated (cell-cultured) meat and seafood instead of a share of conventional meat and its antibiotic, antiparasitic and feed-chain chemical inputs
Replaces: A share of conventional meat, seafood and dairy — and the antibiotics, antiparasitics, feed-crop pesticides and fertilizer of the animal …

D1Constructed (treatment) wetlands for villages, farms, small towns and stormwater — instead of chemical precipitation, chlorination of effluent, or discharge of untreated wastewater
Replaces: Chlorination of small-plant effluents (chlorinated by-products), chemical phosphorus precipitation with iron/aluminium salts at small scale, …

D1Precision-fermentation dairy and egg proteins (whey, casein, ovalbumin) and fungal biomass protein (mycoprotein) instead of a share of antibiotic- and land-intensive animal protein
Replaces: A share of conventional dairy and meat protein — and with it the antibiotics, antiparasitics, fertilizer and pesticide inputs of the …
NOVEL
D1Process equipment for residue-to-product plants — anaerobic digesters and biogas upgrading, composting turners and granulation lines, biomass pelleting, pyrolysis and carbonization kilns — instead of incinerators, landfill, open lagoons and open burning
Replaces: Landfill and open dumping of organic waste; open burning of crop residues; open anaerobic lagoons; incineration of wet organic waste

D1Saprolegnia (water mould) and egg-fungus control without malachite green and formalin — UV water treatment, salt, hydrogen peroxide, antagonistic bacteria and hatchery hygiene
Replaces: Malachite green (prohibited in food fish in EU, USA, Russia, China — still found illegally), formalin baths for eggs and fish, (partly) …

D1Bio-based binders and bio-solvents instead of petrochemical resins and VOC solvent systems in paints and coatings
Replaces: Petro-derived alkyd/acrylic binders; volatile organic solvent systems (white spirit, toluene, xylene) in solvent-borne paints; part of …

3 · How to implement 5 steps

  1. 1
    Feasibility and design
Assess the site and climate context and the feasibility of the system.
  2. 2
    Typology and species
Choose the system type (facade-climbing or living wall) and the plant species.
  3. 3
    Frame and irrigation
Install the supporting structure and the irrigation system.
  4. 4
    Planting and substrate
Set up the substrate and install the plants.
  5. 5
    Operation
Establish a maintenance, monitoring and irrigation protocol.
