## Overview and value chain

Markers: [EC: US IRA 45V Clean Hydrogen & EU Hydrogen Strategy | OECD: Bioenergy | Regulator: EPA (USA), ADEME (France), NEA (China)]

Hydrogen fuel from biomass produces molecular hydrogen (H2) — the
lightest energy carrier, with a gravimetric energy density of about
120 MJ/kg, the highest of any chemical fuel — from renewable biomass
rather than from natural gas. The dominant thermochemical route
gasifies lignocellulosic feedstock, biogas or solid waste into a
syngas of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, then drives a water-gas shift
reactor to convert the CO into additional H2 before pressure-swing
adsorption lifts purity above 99.97%. India's Gensol–Matrix
consortium biomass-to-hydrogen project converts 25 tonnes of bio-waste
into 1 tonne of hydrogen per day, and Indian Oil has committed a
₹2 trillion hydrogen plan, signalling that bio-derived hydrogen is
moving from pilot to scaled demonstration. Bloom Energy's solid-oxide
fuel-cell and electrolyser stacks reform biogas directly, while Topsoe
couples SOEC hydrogen with its eREACT syngas reactor to turn biogas
and biogenic CO2 into green methanol and SAF.

The key directions of hydrogen fuel from biomass are:
1. **Biomass gasification to hydrogen (Gasification-to-H2):** air/oxygen-blown or steam gasification of biomass and waste into syngas, then water-gas shift and PSA — Air Products, Sinopec and Engie's Gaya platform.
2. **Bio-SMR and eSMR of biomethane (Biomethane Reforming):** steam methane reforming or electrically-heated reforming of upgraded biomethane to hydrogen — Topsoe eSMR and eREACT.
3. **Solid-oxide biogas-to-hydrogen (Solid-Oxide Reforming):** electrochemical reforming of biogas/biomethane in SOFC/SOEC stacks — Bloom Energy.
4. **Biological and dark fermentation (Dark Fermentation):** microbial conversion of sugars and wet biomass to hydrogen plus organic acids — Indian Oil R&D and the Gensol–Matrix biomass-to-H2 plant.

## US

The US anchors bio-hydrogen through solid-oxide reforming and large-scale syngas-to-hydrogen technology licensing, underpinned by the IRA 45V clean-hydrogen production tax credit.

### solid-oxide reforming, gasification licensing, 45V hydrogen credit
- **Bloom Energy:** solid-oxide fuel-cell and electrolyser stacks that reform biogas/biomethane directly to hydrogen; a $25 billion Brookfield financing pact (June 2026), 400 MW Centrica data-center supply and a 2.8 GW Oracle commitment scale the platform.

### Topsoe, Engie, EU Hydrogen Strategy
- **Topsoe (Denmark):** eSMR electrically-heated steam methane reforming of biomethane, SOEC hydrogen and the compact eREACT reactor; the FrontFuel demonstration chains SOEC H2, eREACT syngas and Fischer-Tropsch synthesis to turn biogas and biogenic CO2 into SAF.
- **Engie (France):** the Gaya biomass-gasification platform and the Jupiter 1000 power-to-gas demonstrator at Fos-sur-Mer, which after five years of operation now feeds hydrogen into the gas grid under a NaTran call for interest.
- **EU Hydrogen Strategy & RED III:** the bloc's hydrogen strategy and renewable-energy directive underwrite bio-derived and biomethane-reforming hydrogen alongside electrolytic pathways.

## Tech stack and innovations

The stack couples thermochemistry (gasification and reforming), gas purification (shift and PSA), and solid-oxide electrochemistry into a biomass-to-hydrogen supply chain.

1. **Biomass gasification and water-gas shift (Gasification + WGS):**
   - oxygen- or steam-blown gasifiers convert lignocellulosic biomass and waste into a syngas of CO and H2; a downstream water-gas-shift reactor converts CO with steam into CO2 and additional hydrogen.

#### Stage 1: Feedstock preparation
Lignocellulosic biomass, agro-residues, biogas or upgraded biomethane are received, dried and sized; the Gensol–Matrix plant handles 25 tonnes of bio-waste per day and Sinopec's biomass-gasification programme draws on China's agricultural residues.

#### Stage 2: Gasification / reforming
Biomass is gasified with oxygen or steam (or biomethane is steam-reformed) over catalysts into a raw syngas of carbon monoxide and hydrogen; Topsoe's eSMR and eREACT and Bloom's solid-oxide stacks define the reforming technology frontier.

#### Stage 3: Water-gas shift
The syngas passes a water-gas-shift reactor where carbon monoxide reacts with steam over iron and copper catalysts to produce additional hydrogen and CO2, maximising the H2 yield of the chain.

#### Stage 4: PSA purification
A pressure-swing adsorption unit separates hydrogen from CO2 and residual gases over molecular-sieve beds, delivering fuel-cell-grade hydrogen above 99.97% purity.

#### Stage 5: Compression and storage
Purified hydrogen is compressed to 350–700 bar for tube-trailer and mobility use, or liquefied and stored, with ISO 16111-compliant stationary storage bridging production and off-take.

#### Stage 6: Off-take and metering
Hydrogen is delivered to fuel-cell mobility, refining, ammonia and e-fuel synthesis, or injected into the gas grid — Engie's Jupiter 1000 demonstrator metering renewable hydrogen into the French grid under the EU Hydrogen Strategy.
