1 · What it gives

Lignin valorization converts lignin into chemicals, materials and fuels inside an integrated biorefinery. Lignin-based products can replace fossil feedstocks such as phenol in phenolic resins, or fossil fuel in lime kilns. Commercial scale exists: the Domtar LignoBoost plant (25,000 tonnes a year, since 2013) and Stora Enso’s Sunila plant (50,000 tonnes a year, since 2015). Global lignin production is estimated at 40–50 million tonnes a year, mostly from pulp and paper.

D3Biogas and biomethane from organic waste instead of firewood, charcoal, LPG and diesel
Replaces: Firewood, charcoal and dung as cooking fuel (household air pollution); fossil LPG and natural gas for cooking and heat; diesel-generator …
FUEL
D3Bioethanol as fuel and octane/oxygenate instead of MTBE, high-aromatic petrol and fossil petrol
Replaces: MTBE and ETBE oxygenates (groundwater pollutant), aromatics (benzene, toluene) used for octane, lead anti-knock legacy; part of fossil …

3 · How to implement 4 steps

  1. 1
    Acidify with CO2
Absorb CO2 to acidify the black liquor (LignoBoost step 1).
  2. 2
    Filter
    Separate solids by filtration.
  3. 3
    Re-suspend and acidify
Re-suspend the lignin and acidify with sulphuric acid.
  4. 4
    Wash and use
Wash and filter to purified lignin, then supply it as a binder, resin component or fuel.
