1 · What it gives

A community seed bank is a locally governed institution whose core function is keeping seed for local use. Community-based native seed production and restoration nurseries are described as a better alternative to wild seed collection, giving higher-quality plant material. In Brazil the market is driven by legal requirements for environmental liability: cooperatives have sold over 406,000 seedlings and 1.7 tonnes of seed since 2012.

2 · What it replaces 6

D1Nitrogen-fixing and nutrient-mobilizing microbes (Azospirillum, Azotobacter, engineered root-associated diazotrophs) for maize, wheat and rice instead of part of the urea dose
Replaces: Part (typically 10–25 %) of the mineral N (urea, UAN, ammonium nitrate) applied to non-legume cereals
AGROCHEM
D1Biofilm control by enzymes and bacteriophages instead of oxidizing and non-oxidizing biocides in cooling and process water
Replaces: Oxidizing biocides (chlorine, bromine, chlorine dioxide, peracetic regimes) and non-oxidizing ones (isothiazolinones, quats, DBNPA, …
WATER
D2Bumblebee pollination instead of hormone sprays and manual vibration in greenhouse tomatoes
Replaces: Fruit-setting hormone sprays (synthetic auxins such as 4-CPA / tomatotone) and labour-intensive manual flower vibration in greenhouse …
MACRO
D1Lake and pond algal-bloom (cyanobacteria) control by nutrient reduction, biomanipulation (fish-stock management, zooplankton), submerged-plant restoration and floating wetlands — instead of copper sulfate and chemical algicides
Replaces: Copper sulfate and other copper algicides, diquat/endothall-type aquatic herbicides, (partly) repeated chemical phosphorus inactivation …
SERV
D3Forest defoliator control (Siberian silk moth, spongy/gypsy moth, nun moth, pine moths) with Bt kurstaki, nucleopolyhedrovirus (NPV) and pheromone mating disruption — instead of aerial chemical insecticides
Replaces: Aerial spraying of pyrethroids (cypermethrin, deltamethrin), organophosphates, and chitin-synthesis inhibitors (diflubenzuron) over forests
PEST
D3Biomass district heating instead of heating oil and coal
Replaces: Heating oil and coal in district-heating and combined heat-and-power plants

3 · How to implement 4 steps

  1. 1
    Find demand
Identify regional market demand for seed.
  2. 2
    Coordinate collection
Coordinate seed collection among community groups.
  3. 3
    Process and store
Process and store the collected seed.
  4. 4
    Test quality
    Run quality testing before sale.

Leading companies and institutes (from the brief)

Examples named in the sources: the Xingu Seed Network and the Cerrado Seeds Network in Brazil and the Farmers’ Seed Network in China. In Brazil the Ministry of Agriculture (MAPA) regulates seed commercialisation through the National Register of Seeds and Seedlings (RENASEM). Nurseries and seed suppliers are matched by the portal under Ecosystem Restoration.
