Peatland & wetland rewetting restoration

Raising the water table of drained peatland to restore ecosystem functions, cut greenhouse-gas emissions and restart peat accumulation — from a 7.5-year pilot in Sumatra reported in 2024 to scaling programmes in Europe for 2025–2030.

1 · What it gives

Peatland rewetting raises the water table in previously drained peatland to restore ecosystem functions, reduce greenhouse-gas emissions and promote peat accumulation. It is a restorative alternative to drainage-based agriculture, commercial forestry and peat extraction. Restoration has moved from long-term pilots, such as a 7.5-year trial in Sumatra reported in 2024, to scaling-up programmes in Europe for 2025–2030.

D2Disease-resistant crop varieties (marker-assisted breeding, stacked resistance genes, cisgenesis) instead of routine fungicide spray programmes
Replaces: Season-long protective fungicide programmes on susceptible varieties — e.g. 10–20 sprays of mancozeb/chlorothalonil/metalaxyl against potato …
SEED
D3Peat-free and peat-reduced growing media (coir, wood fibre, composted bark, green-waste compost, sphagnum farming) instead of extracted peat
Replaces: Peat (sphagnum moss peat) as the main constituent of potting soils and professional horticultural substrates
AGROCHEM
D3Augmentative biological control in greenhouse vegetables instead of insecticide and acaricide programmes
Replaces: Calendar sprays of insecticides and acaricides (organophosphates, neonicotinoids, pyrethroids, abamectin) against whitefly, thrips, aphids, …
MACRO
D2Composting and anaerobic digestion of separately collected biowaste instead of landfill
Replaces: Landfilling of food and garden waste (methane emissions, leachate) and its incineration with mixed waste
SERV
D2Copper (and nickel/cobalt) recovery from low-grade and secondary sulfide ores by heap and dump bioleaching + SX-EW — instead of concentration and smelting
Replaces: Pyrometallurgical smelting of sulfide concentrates (SO2, arsenic, heavy-metal emissions) for low-grade ores that would otherwise be …
SERV
D2Crop disease forecasting models, spore traps, pheromone and smart pest traps and field diagnostics — spray when risk is real instead of calendar-based fungicide and insecticide programmes
Replaces: Fixed-interval ("calendar") protective fungicide sprays and routine insecticide applications regardless of pest pressure

3 · How to implement 3 steps

  1. 1
    Block canals
Rewet step by step by blocking canals with dams.
  2. 2
    Clear vegetation
    Clear non-native vegetation.
  3. 3
    Enrichment planting
    Plant native species where needed.
