Precision fermentation uses genetically engineered microbes — yeast, filamentous fungi and bacteria — as cell factories for specific high-value molecules: dairy and egg proteins, HMOs, industrial enzymes, vitamins and flavors. Optimized strains reach 30–50 g/L of target product at >90% purity, and the cost of alternative proteins is falling on a trajectory from $10–20/kg (2020) toward a target of $3–6/kg. Versus animal agriculture the technology cuts land use by 95%, water use by 90% and greenhouse-gas emissions by 80%. The synergy is the pairing of a designed strain with a tuned upstream-downstream process and real-time PAT analytics.

Stage 1: Strain build

A host is reprogrammed (CRISPR, synthetic biology) to secrete the target molecule at 30–50 g/L titer.

Stage 2: Seed train

A cell bank is expanded through staged seed bioreactors to production volume.

Stage 3: Fermentation

Fed-batch or continuous runs convert sugar feedstock into product broth under PAT control.

Stage 4: Purification

Chromatography and TFF isolate the molecule to >90% purity; in the EU, GMM-DNA clearance is mandatory.

Stage 5: Drying & formulation

Spray-drying yields a standardized ingredient powder.

Stage 6: B2B application

The ingredient enters food, beverage, nutrition and cosmetic products.
