Preventive multi-omics biomarker panels for consumers
Repeated molecular profiling — genome, proteome, metabolome, microbiome — combined with digital health data and coaching to catch risk early; pilot-stage science with a direct-to-consumer testing market around it.
1 · What it gives
A consumer preventive multi-omics panel uses multi-level molecular profiles, tracked over time and combined with digital health data and feedback, to support predictive and preventive health. It replaces provider-initiated ordering and interpretation with direct-to-consumer tests where the consumer orders and pays. Evidence is pilot-level: a 16-month preventive multi-omics and digital monitoring study (P4 healthcare) followed 96 participants. The commercial layer is direct-to-consumer testing, projected at more than US$9 billion for DTC medical testing by 2033 and over US$2.5 billion for DTC genetic testing by 2025.

3 · How to implement 4 steps
- 1Baseline profilingCollect baseline multi-omics (genome, plasma proteome and metabolome, autoantibody profile, gut microbiome) plus health and behaviour measures from people without serious disease.
- 2Longitudinal measurementRepeat molecular and digital health measurements over time to build individual trajectories.
- 3IntegrateIntegrate omics and digital signals, for example with multi-omics factor analysis, to reveal subgroups and personal trajectories.
- 4Feedback and coachingReturn actionable data on a dashboard interpreted by a physician and give personalised coaching to motivate lifestyle change.

United States
In the US, clinical laboratory tests fall under CLIA via CMS, and some direct-to-consumer genetic tests are also regulated by the FDA as in vitro devices. Consumer genetic testing is overseen by several agencies, including the FTC, CMS and the FDA. DTC omics products can blur the line between wellness and medical devices, which changes the oversight and evidence required.
European Union
The EU has no specific EU or national law for direct-to-consumer genetic testing; the In Vitro Diagnostic Regulation (EU) 2017/746 governs the in vitro diagnostics relevant to testing.
China
The sources reviewed on 2026-10-16 identified no China regulator or standard specific to this technology. Treat the route as case-by-case and ask for a check.

Main risks from the sources: consumers may feel anxiety and lack support after a positive risk result, so regulators are urged to require post-test counselling; consumers may misinterpret results, so clinical utility depends on benefits, harms and how tests are used; and the wellness-versus-medical-device boundary creates oversight uncertainty.
