Serialization, labeling and track-and-trace is the equipment and
software layer that assigns a unique, machine-readable identity —
typically a GS1 2D Data Matrix code — to every saleable unit of a
pharmaceutical product, prints and verifies it on the packaging line,
aggregates child-to-parent relationships (bottle into bundle into case
into pallet), and then follows each unit electronically from factory to
dispenser through a multi-enterprise network. It is the regulatory
backbone of the US Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA, full
traceability from 2023), the EU Falsified Medicines Directive (FMD,
with the European Medicines Verification System and on-pack
anti-tamper seals) and China's two-dimensional-code mandate, and the
operational foundation of anti-counterfeiting, targeted recall and
chargeback-verification workflows. The platform is mid-transformation
along four axes: the move from lot-level to unit-level traceability as

serialization-OEM layer remains substantially imported (Italian, German
and North-American), so the Chinese regional block is held qualitative.

#### Stage 1: Serial number allocation
The multi-enterprise network (TraceLink OPUS) or local site system allocates a pool of unique GS1 serial numbers to the production order, drawn from the brand-owner's range.

#### Stage 2: Print and vision verify
Each bottle, blister or case is inkjet- or laser-printed with its 2D Data Matrix, then camera-inspected for code grade, readability and data content at line speed; rejects are ejected before aggregation.
