Soil-conditioning biological products (microbial remediation agents)

Microbial agents rich in bioactive substances such as extracellular polysaccharides that restore degraded soils, e.g. acidic ones — in China a formal registration category since 2018 with over 133 valid certificates for 58 companies by 2024.

1 · What it gives

Soil-conditioning biological products — called soil remediation microbial agents in China — remediate degraded soils such as acidic soils. They replace or complement chemical-intensive soil management and conventional fertilisers that suffer from high cost, limited efficacy or secondary pollution. The technology is commercial and growing: a formal registration category was created in 2018 and, as of 2024, over 133 valid registration certificates were held by 58 companies. China’s broader microbial fertiliser market exceeds 35 million tonnes of annual capacity and USD 5.5 billion.

D1Fermentation (stainless and single-use bioreactors, solid-state reactors) and downstream equipment (centrifuges, filtration, spray and fluid-bed drying, formulation) for local production of enzymes, microbial products and fermentation ingredients instead of chemical-synthesis plants and imports
Replaces: Chemical-synthesis routes and imports for the products in FI-, FD-, I- and A-series articles (enzymes, organic acids, vitamins, microbial …
EAC
D1Lower-toxicity textile dyeing and dye-effluent treatment with biological methods — bio-based indigo reduction and enzymatic indigo routes, microbial pigments, and biological decolorization of dye effluent — instead of sodium dithionite reduction, aniline-derived synthetic indigo and untreated/chemically treated dye effluent
Replaces: Sodium dithionite (hydrosulfite) for indigo vat reduction, synthetic indigo made from aniline (traces of aniline in dyed denim), some azo …
CHEM
D1Recovered phosphorus (struvite and other recovered phosphates from biological wastewater and digester streams) instead of fertilizer made from cadmium-bearing phosphate rock
Replaces: A share of DAP/MAP/superphosphate made from mined phosphate rock; chemical P-removal with iron and aluminium salts at treatment plants …
AGROCHEM
D1Biological wastewater treatment and bio-coagulants instead of alum, ferric chloride and synthetic polyelectrolytes
Replaces: Aluminium sulfate (alum) and PAC coagulants; ferric chloride; synthetic polyacrylamide flocculants (residual acrylamide monomer); part of …
WATER
D2Cassava mealybug classical biological control with Anagyrus lopezi instead of insecticides
Replaces: Insecticide spraying (rarely affordable for smallholders) and uncontrolled crop losses from the invasive cassava mealybug in Africa
CLASSIC
D2Crop residues (rice and wheat straw, cane trash) managed by in-situ incorporation with microbial decomposers, mulching and collection for biogas/bio-CNG instead of open-field burning
Replaces: Open burning of rice/wheat straw and sugarcane trash to clear fields between crops; pre-harvest cane burning

3 · How to implement 4 steps

  1. 1
    Isolate strains
Select and isolate functional microbial strains.
  2. 2
    Formulate
Match and formulate the strains with ingredients such as organic matter.
  3. 3
    Test
Run pot experiments, then field tests under the evaluation protocols.
  4. 4
    Register
    Complete product registration.
