Urban and vertical farming grows crops in stacked, indoor systems close to
cities, cutting food miles and weather risk. After a 2023–2026 shakeout,
the operator industry is markedly smaller: Plenty closed its Compton
flagship (up to 4.5 million lb/year of greens) to pivot to strawberries;
AeroFarms was acquired by Palm Ventures in April 2026 to cut debt; UK
Jones Food (up to ~1,000 tons/year) entered administration; and Freight
Farms filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy in April 2025. The survivors restructure
around higher-value crops and distributed models — Plenty's strawberry
pivot, AeroFarms' microgreens, Infarm's in-store modules and SananBio's
Chinese plant factory producing 1.5 tons of vegetables a day. This article
